A joint Tourism Queensland and Gold Coast Tourism campaign valued at over $400,000 will kick off this weekend telling southerners why the Gold Coast is the best place to escape their winter blues and have some fun.

Queensland Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said the Gold Coast’s tourism industry contributed $1.9 billion to the Queensland economy and directly employed 28,100 Queenslanders.

“Tourism is a crucial industry for the Gold Coast and this campaign will help bring a welcome lift in terms of Australian visitor numbers and expenditure for our local tourism operators,” Ms Stuckey said.

Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes said the ‘Gold Coast, Famous for Fun Deals’ campaign was the result of a successful partnership between Tourism Queensland, Gold Coast Tourism, Flight Centre, wholesaler Infinity Holidays and Virgin Australia.

“This year’s campaign is growing on the success of last year’s,” Mr Hayes said.“In 2011 total sales during the campaign period were up 21 percent compared to the year prior. “We hope to increase that margin with this year’s campaign which will promote deals such as stay three nights, pay two from $149* per person twin share. “Promotion of the campaign will occur nationally via television, print, radio and online media from 28 April until 25 May 2012 plus through Flight Centre stores nationally and the company’s online channels.”

Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter said the campaign was another significant part of an aggressive Gold Coast promotional push.“The Gold Coast is more fun than ever, and as a truly year-round destination there will be plenty of fun had by savvy travellers this winter,” he said.

Mr Hayes said the campaign would reinforce the Gold Coast as Australia’s holiday playground, reminding Australians, particularly southerners, that the Gold Coast was a great place to escape the cooler weather and have some fun in the sun in Queensland. “As our southern neighbours start to experience cooler weather in the lead-up to winter we want to keep the Gold Coast’s fun lifestyle, golden beaches, subtropical weather and fantastic attractions top of mind.”

‘Gold Coast, Famous for Fun Deals’ will be on sale from 28 April-25 May 2012 with travel available from 28 April–21 September 2012.
