Cyclone pairs devastate hurricaneAccording to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration historical hurricane tracks database, only once before on record have a pair of cyclones tracked within 200 nautical miles of Socotra Island within the same season, the Weather Channel reports. Cyclone 12 passed over the island on Oct. 24, 1972. Less than one month later, Cyclone 13 fizzled southeast of Socotra on Nov. 21.

“Jilaa, a village of around 1,150 persons in Shabwah governorate was completely washed away,” Andreas Needham, a United National High Commissioner for Refugees spokesman, said Friday.

A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sumatra on Sunday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no reports of damage or casualties.

According to the US Geological Survey, the impact of the quake was not felt to that extent as its epicentre was at a depth of 14km kilometres (8.5 miles) under the Alor Sea which is roughly 77km from the East Timorese capital of Dili.

5.6-magnitude earthquake shakes Taiwan

earthquakeAccording to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) Taiwan was shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale at 05.09 a.m. on Monday.

The quake was felt near the coast of Taitung County.The epicenter was monitored at 22.8 degrees north latitude and 121.7degrees east longitude, with a depth of 10 km.
