5.6-magnitude earthquake shakes Taiwan

earthquakeAccording to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) Taiwan was shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale at 05.09 a.m. on Monday.





The quake was felt near the coast of Taitung County.The epicenter was monitored at 22.8 degrees north latitude and 121.7degrees east longitude, with a depth of 10 km.




Closest city/cities/towns to epicentrum/hypocenter was Taitung City (min 5000 pop). Nearby country/countries that might be effected, Taiwan (c. 22 894 000 pop). Earthquake epicenter was 46 km (29 miles) from Taitung City (c. 109 600 pop).




In the past 24 hours, there have been one, in the last 10 days one, in the past 30 days three and in the last 365 days fifteen earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater that has struck near. Earthquakes 5.0 to 6.0 may cause light damage to buildings and other structures. There are an estimated 1320 moderate earthquakes in the world each year.
